Wenzel’s Phoenix High-Speed 3D Scanning Technology in Action

PHOENIX II - New Structured Light Projection and Image Processing Sensor

Recently Wenzel America, the North American arm of the precision German metrology company, held a unique live event at their Wixom, Michigan headquarters that compared the effectiveness of seven major metrology technologies.

Their newest video release from the event highlights the Phoenix structured white light scanning 3D sensor. The innovative white light sensor can perform high-speed scanning on traditional CMM frame for reverse engineering and inspection in the automotive industry as well as plastic and sheet metal.  This latest video gives an in-depth look at it’s capabilities and is the sixth in the company’s eight-part continuing Metrology Matters educational video series

October 2015 · Wixom, Michigan – Wenzel America’s Applications Technician, Zach Brown explains how the company’s Phoenix structured white light sensor can gather point clouds in a fast-paced production environment in the company’s latest video release.

This is the sixth in their ongoing series highlighting each of the seven metrology systems demonstrated and compared at Wenzel’s Metrology Matters Live event over the summer. There will be eight videos in total when the series is complete.

The Phoenix white light scanner uses a zebra-like light pattern that enables full-scan point cloud data gathering by the sensor, which is attached to a Renishaw PH10 head, and mounted on a full size Wenzel CMM.  Unlike similar white light scanner sensors, the Phoenix has the CMM-based stability to be used on a high speed production floor for feature recognition including hole diameters and complete part scans for 3D modeling.

“I don’t know of a white light sensor other than the Phoenix that can be mounted on a CMM, fully indexed, and docked on regular probe rack. It’s truly unique in the production environment,” Zach concluded.

Accompanying the video, which can be viewed online, is a 15-page 7-Systems Analysis Whitepaper that includes the Metrology Technical Scorecard with an “at-a-glance” comparison chart of all seven measuring technologies.
